My Journaling Routine That Changed My Mornings

I recently shared on Instagram how journaling has completely transformed my mornings. I used to wake up, reach for my phone, and let the internet dictate my mood and energy for the day. Now, journaling helps me start the day with intention, keeps my mind focused, and allows me to establish my goals before the chaos begins.

It doesn’t have to be complicated — sometimes my journaling routine takes just five minutes, but it makes a huge difference in how I feel for the rest of the day.

Mood Tracking

One of the first things I do is track my mood. I started paying more attention to this when I suspected I was struggling with PMDD. As I’ve shared before, I began taking Lexapro to help with some of the mood swings and anxiety I experienced throughout my cycle.

Mood tracking has helped me recognize patterns in how my body and mind react to daily habits. For example, I’ve noticed that when I eat dinner earlier, read before bed, and get a full 7 ½ hours of sleep, I wake up feeling calmer and more balanced. Looking back at my mood tracker helps me see what’s working and where I may need to adjust.

Daily Gratitude

Every morning, I write down three things I’m grateful for. I try to keep it simple: my kids, Kyle, my health, my parents, or even something as small as a good cup of coffee or a quiet moment. Writing down my gratitude helps shift my mindset and gives me a positive foundation for the day. It’s also been a great tool for managing my anxiety — it always lifts my mood when I need it most.

Affirmations

I’ll be honest — I used to think affirmations felt a little “woo-woo.” But once I started using them, I saw how impactful they can be for setting the tone of my day. I’ve printed out a variety of affirmations and keep them in my journal.

Some of my favorites include:

  • “I’m so lucky.”

  • “Everything works out for me.”

I also have affirmations that are more focused on productivity and staying positive. I read them in the morning — and sometimes again throughout the day — whenever I need a little extra boost.

Daily Goals

The last part of my journaling routine is setting three daily goals. I like to make these simple and achievable so I can start my day with small wins. When I get those early goals checked off, it builds positive momentum and makes me feel more productive for the rest of the day. Productivity really brings me joy, so I like to set myself up for success from the start.

Why Journaling Has Made Such a Difference

Taking just a few minutes every morning to journal has completely shifted my mindset. I’m less reactive, more intentional, and better able to handle whatever the day brings. Whether it’s mood tracking, gratitude, affirmations, or simple goal setting — these small habits have created a meaningful routine that keeps me grounded.
